Dude Rancher Lodge’s Story
The West has changed over time, but our commitment to providing quality lodging, service, compassion, and neighborliness hasn’t.
Billings Born and Bred
Throughout Dude Rancher Lodge’s history, the building has stayed in local hands. The Goan family, led by original owners Annabel and Percival Goan, operated the hotel from its founding until 1992, when Virginia Leuprecht purchased the property. Today, Dude Rancher Lodge is the longest continuously operating business in Billings and is one of the few owner-operated hotel businesses remaining in the city.
The Dude Rancher Lodge’s significance in Western history has been nationally acclaimed, with the property added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
Historic Features
The hotel’s signature “weeping” mortar was constructed using bricks from the original St. Vincent Hospital. The branded carpet throughout the Dude Rancher Lodge’s lobby and rooms feature the insignia of some of the major ranching families behind the hotel’s construction.
Our artwork collection includes original pieces from one of the most celebrated artists of the American West, Will James. As an authentic cowboy author and illustrator, James’ work highlights the wonder of early 20th-century Western life. The largest collection of James’ materials is located at the Yellowstone Art Museum, just a short walk away from the Dude Rancher Lodge.
Haunted History
Some say that visitors roam the halls. Many say that it’s just a tall tale.

Dude Rancher Lodge appears in several “haunted hotel” lists, including Karen Stevens’ book, More Haunted Montana, available for purchase in the hotel lobby. We don’t assign “haunted rooms” or guarantee paranormal experiences, but we welcome ghost hunters and enthusiasts who hope to experience something mysterious.
