LAKE ELMO HISTORY

Lake Elmo

Lake Elmo was initially known as Holling Lake Reservoir. It was authorized as part of the Carey Land Act of 1894 and built in 1906. Its purpose was to provide water to farmland.

This manufactured lake is filled with water diverted from the Yellowstone River near Laurel, MT. The water flows through gravity-fed canals for 63 miles before reaching Lake Elmo.

In the 1930s and 40s, the Lake Elmo Supper Club was based here. People would enjoy the restaurant, hang out with friends, dance, and watch water skiers. The area became a State Park in 1983.

Today, guests can visit the Regional Office for Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. The office features an exceptional collection of taxidermied wildlife.

LAKE ELMO FISHING

Lake Elmo has a variety of fish. You can try to catch fish from shore or use a non-motorized boat for fishing on the lake. Lake Elmo has northern pike, tiger muskie, bluegill, crappie, trout, tullibee, and largemouth bass. The state record for tiger muskie was caught in Lake Elmo and weighed 34 pounds, 12 ounces.

Guests should enjoy fishing and catch and release. There is a "Do Not Eat" advisory for Lake Elmo fish.

Your dog will love enjoying the fresh air and checking out your catch as you fish the lake.

LAKE ELMO DOG PARK

Dogs in the park

The Dog Park is another one of Lake Elmo's big draws. The Dog Park features a 200 square feet fenced area. It is located on the west side of the lake and includes a beautiful water area. This is a great place for your dog to run free, play with other dogs, or play a game of fetch. Dogs must be on leash in other areas of the park.

LAKE ELMO WALKING

Take the paved one-and-a-half-mile trail around Lake Elmo if you want to stretch your legs. This is a popular trail for birdwatching, and you can enjoy the scenery as you walk. The lake is also open for swimming during warmer months.

ENJOY LAKE ELMO FISHING WITH DOGS

Lake Elmo is a great destination to enjoy quality time with your family and dogs. So pack your tackle gear and get ready to have a great day out. For another way to enjoy the great outdoors, take the family horseback riding in Billings, MT.
