If you have never been fly fishing before, it is definitely something to experience. Especially when it’s done at the Yellowstone River. The Yellowstone River is the longest river that runs through Montana. As such, there are over 300 miles to choose from that offers trout fishing opportunities. In fact, this stretch of river is internationally known for being one of the best locations for fly fishing. Within the upper half of the river, you’ll find plenty of rainbow trout, brown trout, large whitefish and cutthroat trout. At the lower half, where the water is warmer, you’ll find catfish, sturgeon and large walleye.

For a relaxing way to spend time outdoors, how about floating down the Yellowstone River? Floating is not allowed while in Yellowstone Park; therefore, floating can begin at the town of Gardiner. Since there are few rapids, the river is an excellent way to lounge and enjoy the scenery. However, if you are looking for a little more excitement, you can find several class II rapids downstream from Gardiner. In addition, there are also a number of Class II and Class III rapids 13 miles down from Gardiner where the river runs through Yankee Jim Canyon.
